When I was pregnant there were so many things I said I wouldn’t do. I can just hear myself now “I definitely won’t be breastfeeding” “I definitely won’t be using a dummy” and look at me now, I’m doing both. It’s funny that I thought I had all the answers when I was pregnant, but nothing can prepare you for becoming a mum and the choices you find yourself making in those first days of your child’s life. Having said that, I’m still learning everyday and still trying to figure out Arlo’s different needs.
For us, one of the biggest daily challenges is figuring out whether he wants his dummy for comfort or whether he is hungry and wants feeding. I would say he feeds fairly often, on average every 2.5 hours during the day and maybe twice now during the night but having a dummy really has been a huge help for us. It keeps him satisfied when he isn’t hungry but just wants comfort and has proved particularly useful during walks as it seems to satisfy him and helps send him to sleep.
Before having him I was so quick to say I wouldn’t use one and still to this day I don’t fully know why I said that. I think there is a lot of negativity surrounding the idea of dummies on older children which which I found when I was reading up on it which could have swayed my opinion. For us, using the dummy is a way to soothe Arlo when not a lot else is working and I don’t know how long we’ll be using it for but like with everything since becoming a mum I’m taking each day as it comes.
“Where’s your dummy?” “Oh no poor dummy on the floor” “Pass me his dummy” were just a few of the many lines in our house but not so much since we started using Fairy Tale Design’s dummy clip.
They gifted Arlo a personalised dummy clip beautifully designed with blue, white and grey beads. The idea of a dummy clip is great and something I had never thought of before. It can be attached to his clothes easily using the clip and means that it’ll no longer fall on the floor saving the amount of sterilising we have to do. I love the colours on this one and the simple but effective design of the beeds works well with any of his outfits. You can send them a direct message on their Instagram page to order yours.
Dummy or no dummy there really isn’t a right or wrong with a lot of this parenting business it’s about what works for you and your baby, which I’m starting to realise more and more.
