Being A Mum Beats The Bump

Although I loved talking to my bump, stroking my bump, playing music to my bump and watching my bump grow over the nine months (well 8, because I didn’t know I was pregnant until I was 4 weeks gone), the one thing I didn’t like doing was dressing my bump.

The photo you can see here captures one of the very few moments where I felt comfortable enough to show off my bump, take a picture and share it with my followers. This picture of me at 8 months was actually just a one off. I would very rarely wear pretty dresses or any tight clothing that really showed off my bump. Towards the end of my pregnancy, once my bump was really proud and loud, I was far more comfortable in a baggy t-shirt and a pair of leggings. I don’t know about anyone else but I felt extremely heavy and sluggish at the best of times and I wasn’t about to pretend otherwise. I think one of the main reasons that dressing my bump was a chore was down to the  kind of lifestyle that I had whilst I was carrying my son.

Firstly I would say that I didn’t actually start to show until around the 5 month mark. I was pretty pleased about this as I didn’t want to share my baby news with peers or lecturers at university whilst I was still studying and going to lectures (I will discuss pregnancy and university in a later post) but then I felt like I jumped from not showing at all, to looking like I was about to drop any minute from the 6 month mark and I am not sure that this was as a good thing. I guess there wasn’t much time for me to enjoy my bump as I was hiding it away initially and then suddenly there was no hiding it at all. The move from studying for my degree to then going into full time work struck me with the battle of finding five different but comfortable outfits each week. I felt like there was no in-between where I could properly dress my bump in the way that I wanted to and so by the end of my pregnancy and buzzing with excitement to meet my little one, I was also looking forward to not having a bump to dress each morning.

On a walk with Arlo  recently, I noticed a pregnant woman on the other side of the road and seeing her bump after just recently giving birth I decided that I didn’t miss my bump all that much! In fact, as I looked down at Arlo staring back at me from his pram, I joked to my partner that being a mum beats the bump! But I also wasn’t about to stop feeling good in this dress. It’s such a nice feeling when you feel good about yourself during your pregnancy- definitely treasure those days as much as you can…


5 top tips for anyone struggling to dress their bump 

  1. Have at least one or two dresses in your wardrobe that you can reach for that are comfortable but also make you feel good. If you are at your heaviest during the summer months, opt for a white cotton dress.
  2. Invest in one or two pairs of quality maternity leggings. I brought a black and grey pair from ASOS. I pretty much lived in them and I’m still wearing them two months postpartum!
  3. If you’re anything like me, I couldn’t walk in anything other than trainers whilst I was pregnant. Forget those pictures of pregnant celebrities in stilettos, invest in a pair of light weight springy trainers. Pick a neutral colour so they can be paired easily with any of your outfits.
  4. Add a few items of black clothing into your wardrobe for the days you are feeling particularly sluggish and heavy. Especially in the early days if you are keeping your news a secret, I always found that my bump didn’t show as much when I was wearing black.
  5. If all else fails, get your hair done.  Especially if you’re on maternity leave use this time to treat yourself. Whether you just get it cut or want to brave a new style, having your hair done is the best pick-me-up and something you’re probably not going to get to do much once your little one is here.
